Fraudster jailed following IFB tip-off to police
A 37 year-old-man has been imprisoned for fraud offences following an investigation lead by South Wales Police Economic & Cyber Crime Unit (ECCU), supported by the Insurance Fraud Bureau (IFB).
IFB first contacted the ECCU in early 2021 following reports from its insurer members of a series of fraudulent motor insurance claims.
IFB supported the ECCU in their investigation which ultimately linked Osman Hamasharzad, from Adamsdown, Cardiff, to the fraudulent activity.
The investigation revealed that Hamasharzad had opened a bank account and a motor insurance policy in a false name. He had also obtained a driving licence in a false identity to help facilitate his criminal activity.
He was charged with an offence contrary to the Identity Documents Act 2010, two offences of fraud by false representation contrary to the Fraud Act 2006 and one of perverting the course of justice, contrary to common law.
Hamasharzad plead guilty to all six offences and was sentenced to 16 months imprisonment at Cardiff Crown Court on Thursday 8 September.
Ben Fletcher, Director at IFB, said:
“Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime – it comes at a great financial cost for honest consumers. We’re really pleased to hear that our joint work with South Wales Police and insurers has meant this individual has been brought to justice. We hope this serves as a clear warning to anyone thinking of making a fraudulent insurance claim that they will be caught.”
IFB is a not-for-profit organisation which at the heart of the UK's fight against organised insurance fraud.
