Dangerous crash for cash fraudster handed prison time and driving ban

Following a joint investigation between IFB, its insurer members and City of London Police’s Insurance Fraud Enforcement Department (IFED), an individual from Birmingham was sentenced on Friday 7 September 2018 to 22 months in prison for crash for cash crimes. In addition to this, they were also given a three year disqualification from driving.
The investigation uncovered that they had been intentionally causing collisions on busy roads around Birmingham in order to make fraudulent insurance claims, risking lives in the process.
Discussing the sentencing, Jason Potter, Head of Investigations at the IFB, said the culprit was: “…A reckless individual who forced motorists into accidents on a notoriously busy road. The victims in this case were innocent people going about their day to day lives and the fraudster did not hesitate to put their lives in danger for financial gain.
“This investigation demonstrates the commitment of the industry to stamping out this type of criminal activity. This sentencing should serve as a clear message to would-be fraudsters that they will pay the price for their selfish and abhorrent behaviour.”
